Johns Hopkins Solutions Overview
I handled all motion graphics for this video, which introduces Johns Hopkins’ Solutions product on their website. The team included Ariana Cassard (designer), Evan Lazoff (editor and sound designer), and Joel Loukus and Mary Wilcox (creative directors). We used an elegant line element as a connecting thread, weaving it through the b-roll to unify the piece.
This piece challenged me to refine spacing and timing frame by frame. The line element needed to move seamlessly with the b-roll to mimic natural camera movement, while also trimming and weaving around itself to create convincing parallax and elegant motion design. This is most evident when the voiceover references 'sparking discovery' and the line splits into distinct sparks. To achieve precise timing, I duplicated the line and its glowing end multiple times, then adjusted each duplicate's individual path and keyframes so they burst outward from their origin point like actual sparks.
Animating all the elements cohesively with the b-roll presented a significant challenge. The line path needed to appear smooth and elegant, while the path trim required careful keyframing to intersect with the glowing orb and illuminate the on-screen text, creating the effect of emerging from darkness. Finally, all these elements needed to be motion-tracked to the b-roll to reinforce the theme of bringing solutions into the real world.
Ultimately, this piece combined several fundamental techniques to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Minimalist design and animation demand mastery of the core principles to effectively communicate the video's themes. I'm proud of how each team member leveraged that mastery to deliver a cohesive final product for the client.
